Today Steven Soderbergh, the man behind the lens of films such as Erin Brockovich, Ocean’s Eleven and Behind the Candelabra, released a new version of Hitchcock’s Psycho, editing it alongside the 1998 shot-for-shot remake from Gus Van Sant.
The remake seemed like a needless addition to the film’s legacy at the time, but Soderbergh’s concept to then recut the two films together, gives the concept a new life. Even more so, considering that last year Soderbergh retired from directing. This was such a great loss to the industry, that it makes it all the more fantastic to see that he’s still creating.
Here’s the link to Soderbergh’s ‘Psychos’:

The link was down for a day or two, perhaps whilst they sorted out copyright issues. However, it all seems to be working again now. Enjoy!
As much as I hated Van Sant’s remake, this is a really interesting idea, and I’m a Soderbergh fan. I’ll be checking it out.

Totally agree! It’s actually this stage of the remake that makes it interesting, rather than in 1998. It just seems moronic to remake a practically perfect film by shooting it exactly the same way… what did they hope to achieve?! Thank god for Soderbergh!

Exactly. This sort of mashup definitely adds something interesting to the discussion.

I totally remember this psycho film from years ago (I actually liked it). I’m not sure how I feel yet about even the thought of the new version. I haven’t even been interested enough to look into it honestly.

That does sound like an interesting experiment, at minimum.

the link seems to be dead. from what i understand it looks like a video-art project rather than a new re-make though.

Thanks for letting me know! Thats a shame, I’m assuming he has had to take it down due to copyright or something.
Yeah you are right, it’s simply an experiment in editing the two together. Sorry if i mislead it to be more than that!
Thanks for your comment!

didn’t watch the whole thing yet – just the shower scene – and it reminded me of peter tscherkassky’s work ‘outer space’. impressive.

Surely this will be interesting to see. Van Sant’s version is made literally according to Hitchcock’s instructions on the original script, but I was a bit indifferent, it was pretty ordinary remake to me…
I like Soderbergh’s style. For example, Kafka is a brilliant film. I think his Psycho will be a good movie.

Hi! Thanks for commenting! I agree, Soderbergh is a fantastic director! I’m afraid this may be misleading without the link working. Yesterday he released a version of Psycho online that used Hitchcock and Van Sant’s footage, switching back and forth between them. Sorry if that wasn’t clear, it would have made sense if the link was working!
I’m not sure why the link has been taken down, but it was interesting to watch and hope it will be back on Soderbergh’s website soon.
